Round 3: Pleasantly surprising

Round 3: Pleasantly surprising

This post serves as both a wrap up for the now long past Round 3 and a reminder to tip for Round 4. (That's my explanation for not getting around to writing this until Friday morning and I'm sticking with it.)
Aside from plenty of chocolate, and footy action, there were plenty of surprises over the Easter break. The biggest surprise being that six, yes 6, away teams won. Goes to show that people sure do like to get away at Easter.

Saints had their first win, comfortably trouncing the Lions. Riewoldt was pleasantly surprised to find his yips are gone and his kicking boot back on.
The Hawks were pleasantly surprised by their win against Geelong at Geelong. Not good for tipsters though.
Can't say the Tigers were all that surprised to lose to West Coast.
Sydney were pleasantly surprised, holding off a fast finishing Carlton, to register their first win of the season.
The Crows were more than pleasantly surprised by the goal umpire's decision to award a touched behind in the dying minutes of the game. The loss keeps the Demons 0-3, and sitting on the bottom of the ladder with Richmond.
The tall timber continues to fall (poor Doggies) but they had their fair share of surprises with a determined win against the Bombers.
The Roos were too full of chocolate to run, and Collingwood carved them up.
And the best surprise of all : Freo's win over Port, in Adelaide! Brilliant. Enough said.

Round Two - Tale of two halves

Round Two - Tale of two halves

Sometimes I wonder what goes on during the half time break. One team - confident, quick and in the lead - runs off the field and a completely different team re-emerges - confused, slow and possibly drunk. Do the players nip off up the shops, or go out for a big boozy lunch and then a cat nap? Cos it sure does look like it sometimes. Though I'm pretty sure you can pick the teams that get shouted at by the coach for half an hour. There were plenty of games this weekend that were the tale of two halves. You're cursing your tips on minute and praising the comeback the next (or vice versa). Here're the culprits - or heroes - from Round Two:

Bulldogs switched to overdrive in the second half to overrun Melbourne
Freo switched off in the second half but managed to stave off Carlton
Pies had a great second half, kicking 14 goals against Hawthorn
A fast finishing Crows almost had the Eagles.
The Saints held back the Tigers, but not before Richmond gave them a bit of a scare.
Essendon tried it on in the second quarter, not realising this week's theme, ran out of steam and were closed down the mighty Lions.
Geelong posted a second huge victory, this time turning the Roos into cat food.
The Power outdid the selfish "there's no I in team" Swans. The Premiers are now sitting at the wrong end the ladder - Ouch.

I hate Gene Pitney
posted by Mrs D on April 6, 2006 05:57
Ok I don't hate the man, geez he just died. But what I do hate is now that f'n song 'popularised' by Gene is being played constantly!
You know that song I'm talkin' 'bout - 24 Hours From Tulsa.

Of course it was the genius combo of Burt Bacharach & Hal David (methinks) that came up with the song ... so they can take MUCH of the BLAME.

So anyhoo, here's a sample of the lyrics:

I had to write to say that I won't be home anymore
'Cause something happened to me while I was driving home and I'm not the same anymore

So aside from rhyming 'anymore' with itself, it starts off as a 'Dear John/Joan' letter, but does he need to be so cruel about it? Yes he does, read on ...

So he catches sight of some scank in a car park:
As I pulled in outside of the small hotel she was there
And so I walked up to her Asked where I could get something to eat and she showed me where
Smooth. I'm pretty sure this is a double entendre.

So she shows the 'fuckwit' were to get a steak sandwich and a cup of coffee ... I'm surprised he didn't pull his pants down right there

She took me to the cafe I asked her if she would stay
She said "O. K."

Then he charmingly goes on "Honey, can I just give you some details about why I now love this woman, so I can really rub home the fact that you are so DUMPED":

As we were dancing closely
All of a sudden I lost control as I held her charms
And I caressed her kissed her
Told her I'd die before I would let her out of my arms

Yeap, he gots jiggy with the carpark lady, classy

But I think this line is the most insulting:
I hate to do this to you

You so DO NOT you fucking arsehole ... I wouldn't bother driving to Tulsa anytime soon, your stuff is in the trash

the end.

Round one : The Season has begun
posted by Mrs D on April 4, 2006 04:58
Firstly, I want to say that I don't like my football weekend spread out over 5 days - it's unnatural, like cats and dogs sleeping together. Or Carlton winning ...

Now onto the results
West Coast beat the Saints - but not before the starting siren beat most of fans still milling outside the gates trying to get in.
The Doggies were super impressive against the Tigers. For a band of pygmies, they sure can play.
The Cats continued their impressive preseason with a dominating performance against the Lions.
Essendon knocked the reigning premiers off their pedestal (but we all saw that coming didn't we?)
Kangaroos rained on Power's parade in honour of Wanganeen's 300th.
Hawthorn were the thorn in the side for the Purple Jesus' aka Jeff Farmer's 200th at the much hated Aurora stadium (Much hated by me that is)
Carlton won against the Demons. I told you it's unnatural ...
And finally the Crows kept those pesky Pies goalless in the final quarter to register their first win.

So what a mixed bag of results. Some teams have got a lot of thinking to do - I'm looking at you Richmond & Lions.
Others need to buck up and get back the preseason form that had all the bookies in a twist - I'm looking at you Freo, Melbourne and Saints.
